Os hyoideum, yassı ya da yuvarlak fibrokartilaginöz ve kemiksel parçalardan meydana gelmiştir. Hyoid kemiğinin görevi dilin kafatası içinde sabitlenmesidir. Bu kemik şakak kemiğinin processus styloideus'una bağlanır. Evcil memeli hayvanlardan etçillerde bu kemik temporal kemiğin processus mastoideus'una bağlanır.
